In 1960 Vincenzo Marvulli, a mathematics teacher from Altamura, took his wife's dowry — five million lire, no small sum at the time — and bought a stretch of land above the Bradano valley outside Matera. People in town shook their heads over it. The ground was mostly rock and scrub, something like two thousand olive trees scattered through pasture and woodland, and word around Matera was that the man from Altamura understood nothing about farming, that he'd paid good money for stones. What he'd actually bought, it turned out, was land that suited Ogliarola del Bradano just right — the old local variety that takes to this kind of hard, calcareous ground at around 250 meters up. Vincenzo, and later his son Giovanni, worked the grove without chemical fertilizers or pesticides from early on, more from how the land behaved than any stated method, and in 2005 they put a name to that and certified it organic. The oil they press now carries the name Cenzino, the old family nickname for Vincenzo. It has turned up on Flos Olei's list more than once over the years, and in 2025 it was named joint Best Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the guide. The farm still has no website of its own — what reaches people travels through the distributors who carry it.
