In 1888 the Quattrociocchi family put its first olive trees into the ground outside Alatri, in the Ciociaria hill country of Frosinone. The groves are old — some of the trees are attributed to well over a century of standing, per the producer's own account, planted long before anyone wrote the date down anywhere official. What began as one farmstead passed down through the generations until it reached Americo Quattrociocchi, grandson of the man who started it. He kept the Itrana, Leccino, and Moraiolo trees his family had always worked, converted the whole grove to organic farming, and began entering the oil in competitions most small producers skip. The flagship, Olivastro, a monovarietal pressed from Itrana alone, took Best in World at the New York International Olive Oil Competition in 2013. It went on to pick up Flos Olei recognition across four separate years, plus Ercole Olivario, the Biol International Award, Sol d'Oro, and a mention from Slow Food. The oil is still made the same way: olives picked by hand and pressed the same day, cold, in stainless steel, before the fruit has time to sit around and lose what makes it worth pressing in the first place.
