The olive trees at Bosco Pontoni, the Colonna family's estate near San Martino in Pensilis in Molise, trace back to 1968, when Francesco Colonna put the first rows into ground that had come to his family generations earlier through marriage. He spent decades working the land, growing wheat and vegetables alongside the young grove, before his daughter Marina joined him in 1986 to help reshape how the oil was presented to the world, and she designed the amphora-inspired bottle that still carries the Colonna name. When Francesco died in 1996, Marina took over the estate and kept building on what he had started: fifteen-plus cultivars now planted across fifty-five of the property's one hundred eighty hectares, from native Peranzana and Gentile di Larino to Coratina, Frantoio, and even Greek Kalamata, with ten more hectares of experimental varieties added in 1998. She pushed the mill toward citrus oils too, milling organic lemon, orange, tangerine, and bergamot right alongside the olives at pressing. The Peranzana monovarietal scored 96 out of 100 in the Flos Olei guide, and in 2024 the estate's Molensis blend took first place in the light fruity category at the Ercole Olivario, Italy's national olive oil competition. The DOP Molise bottling stays true to a traditional regional pairing, built from Leccino and Gentile di Larino grown right there at Bosco Pontoni.
