Frantoio Ranchino

Umbria · Italy
On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Eugenio Ranchino comes from a family that had pressed olives on the hills above Orvieto for generations, working land that straddles the boundary between Orvieto and Porano. In 1992 he took over and set out to rebuild the operation from the ground up, pulling out vineyards to plant olive trees and renovating the mill itself. The estate sits at about 450 meters, on volcanic soil laid down some three million years ago in the Pliocene, a rarity for Umbria's olive country. Roughly 8,500 trees grow there now — native Umbrian varieties alongside others Ranchino selected himself, new plantings set among older family groves laid out in the traditional patterns of the area. The flagship oil, Canale, takes its name from the località where the mill stands. A second oil, Le Femmine, is named for Ranchino's two daughters, who now work alongside him. The estate holds DOP Umbria certification and belongs to the regional Strada dell'Olio Dop Umbria. In 2025 the Flos Olei guide named Frantoio Ranchino the best in the world for extraction method, a recognition earned by choosing a pressing method suited to each cultivar and by holding the whole chain, from grove to mill, to the same standard, right up to the moment the oil leaves the press.
