What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The mill, told properly

The Cooperativa Oleificio Pozzuolese dates itself to 1969 — 'dal 1969 i soci dell'Oleificio Pozzuolese' is how its site opens the account — at Pozzuolo, in the commune of Castiglione del Lago on Lake Trasimeno in western Umbria. Its oil is certified under the DOP Umbria – Colli del Trasimeno, and the denomination bottling is called Olio del Duca, in homage to Ascanio della Corgna, the sixteenth-century first marquis of Castiglione del Lago. The blend rests on Agogia, the autochthonous variety of these hills, alongside Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo; the cooperative also runs an organic line, states that it works on 100 per cent renewable energy, and is listed at three leaves in Gambero Rosso's 2025 oil guide.

At Villastrada, a frazione of the same commune, on the via Chiusi along the provincial road SP 301, stands an olive entered in the RAMI tree register in October 2021 under the code 06/C309/PG/10 and classed of national monumental interest: what survives is the outer shell of a single original trunk, now divided into seven separate trunks arranged in a circle, whose original circumference the register reconstructs at roughly 12.70 metres. The register records no age for the tree.
