On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The mill, told properly

Millenarium is a bottling of Mediterranea Foods srl, the Anastasi family firm at Rizziconi, in the plain of Gioia Tauro in the province of Reggio Calabria. The company's account runs three generations deep: Antonino Anastasi, its founder, worked for years alongside his father Domenico before converting the family business to organic agriculture at the beginning of the 1990s, and the firm now counts thirty years in organics and more than ten in biodynamics, with organic extra virgin olive oil still its core business. Its certificate listings include ICEA, Demeter Italia, the Olio di Calabria IGP, BRC and IFS.

The oil is pressed exclusively from Ottobratica olives, an autochthonous Calabrian variety and one of the eight principal cultivars named in Article 5 of the Olio di Calabria IGP production rules, whose zone is the entire territory of the region and which require of the oil an acidity no higher than 0.50 per cent and total polyphenols of at least 200 ppm. The producer's page for the oil reaches back to the eighth century BC, to Locri Epizefiri and the ancient Metauria that stood where Gioia Tauro now stands, for the olive's history on this coast.

The trees are on the Cannavà estate, from which the oil takes its name; the producer calls them ulivi millenari, an attribution that rests on the company's own pages. The oil is biodynamic, and every bottle carries its own individual number.
