Yanni's Olive Grove

Nea Potidaia, Chalkidiki · Greece
On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Yannis Prodromou and his wife Evi Psounou come from families that had farmed olives around Nea Potidaia for generations, selling their harvest each year to bigger companies for someone else's label. In 2012, in the middle of the Greek financial crisis, they decided to press their own oil instead. Their grove sits on the waterfront near the old Potidaia canal, the cut that separates the Kassandra peninsula from the mainland, and holds about 6,000 trees, all Chondroelia of Chalkidiki. They knew how to grow olives; milling extra virgin oil well was a different skill entirely, so they went back to school to learn it properly, hand-harvesting each September and pressing within hours of picking. In 2014 Yanni's became the first producer certified for the PDO Agoureleo Chalkidikis, Greece's only protected-designation early-harvest oil. The family also opened their groves to research, working with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Alzheimer Hellas on MICOIL, a clinical trial into whether their high-phenolic early-harvest oil can help patients with mild cognitive impairment, with results published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Along the way the oils have picked up more than 50 awards at international competitions, including gold at the New York International Olive Oil Competition. Evi still runs the business day to day, while their children study business administration and food chemistry, expecting to take it on next.
