Mueloliva was started in 1942 at Priego de Córdoba by Mateo Muela Velasco, first buying and selling oil and then milling his own. When the second generation took over in 1975 the firm was running four mills and buying fruit from some 2,500 growers. The third generation runs it now, out of a plant rebuilt in 2010 with solar arrays covering about 35 per cent of its energy and seven automated filling lines, crushing around 50 million kilos of olives a season with a workforce of 150.
Venta del Barón is the oil the family built its name on: Picuda and Hojiblanca picked green and by hand from high ground around 1,000 metres inside the Sierras Subbéticas natural park, milled cold below 27°C and within ten hours of picking, and bottled under the Priego de Córdoba protected designation of origin. That designation has dates of its own — a regulatory council constituted in 1995, entry in the European Union register on 4 October 1999, and 29,628 hectares across the four municipalities of Priego de Córdoba, Carcabuey, Almedinilla and Fuente-Tójar.
By the producer's own count the oils have taken some 400 international awards from 17 countries, among them two first prizes at the International Olive Council's Mario Solinas Quality Award and repeated placings in the top twenty of the Italian guide Flos Olei.
