What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Taziry stands about 16 km outside the town of Siwa, at the foot of Siwa's Red Mountain, Adrar Azugagh, facing the White Mountain and looking over Gary Lake and the dunes of the Great Sand Sea. The name means full moon in the Siwan Amazigh language. Buildings are raised in karshif, the local mix of mud brick, salt and other natural material, with palm ceilings and wooden beams; the 30 rooms and chalets are lit by candles inside and oil lamps and torches outside, and cross-ventilation and shading stand in for air conditioning. Green Prophet, writing in July 2012, described the same arrangement, together with the camel and Arabian horse breeding and the organic farm; a lodge directory dates the start of the project to 2008.

Those farms feed the kitchen and the shop. The olive oil is a mechanically cold-pressed extra virgin from hand-picked green and black Outigen olives, the local Siwan variety, which the producer states are organically grown, and it goes into 250 ml. The wider project has its own paper trail: in October 2016, at the eleventh Global Forum on Human Settlements in Quito, held alongside the United Nations Habitat III conference, Taziry was given the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Award, with a commendation as a Global Human Settlements Model of Building, supported by the United Nations Environment Programme.
