What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Son Moragues stands in the mountains above Valldemossa, on Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana, and the name carries its own record: it means property of the Moragues family. It runs to more than 300 hectares of oak and pine forest, dry stone terraces, orchards and what the estate describes as centuries-old olive groves, with more than 500 years of agricultural activity behind it and a line of figures it names itself, from Mateu Moragues to Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria. Its present shape was settled after the medieval reconquest: in the 15th and 16th centuries thousands of wild olive trees were grafted, and dry stone terraces, cisterns, orchards and irrigation systems were built across the slopes.

Two decades of work have gone into regenerating that ground and restoring the crops that once made the farm an agricultural power in its district. The estate's goods now carry the SONMO name, a contraction of Son Moragues, with tableware and homeware designed and made on the premises alongside the food.

The oil is pressed from Mallorquina, the variety native to the Serra de Tramuntana, from trees the producer puts at centuries old, inside a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. It is bottled under the Oli de Mallorca protected designation of origin and certified organic by CBPAE. The premium bottling, drawn from the earliest crop of the year, goes into 500 ml amber glass hand-blown one at a time by Gordiola of Mallorca to a design made for SONMO.
