On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The mill, told properly

Quinta de São Braz is at Lamas de Orelhão, in the municipality of Mirandela, in Trás-os-Montes in Portugal's northeast, and trades as Quinta de S. Braz, Unipessoal Lda. Its own account opens with the statement that the family's history began decades ago with dedication to the cultivation of the land, above all its olive trees, and speaks of techniques refined across generations; it names no founding year and no family members. The estate grows three varieties native to the region — Cobrançosa, Madural and Verdeal Transmontana — and sells its extra virgin oils in three ranges, Premium, Essentials and Organic.

The municipality of Mirandela's page on the DOP Azeite de Trás-os-Montes records olive oil documented in the town since the sixteenth century, citing João de Barros on the quantities the region then produced, and lists Mirandela among the municipalities of the protected area, with the producers' association and the control body both seated in the town. The pages opened for this record do not state whether Quinta de São Braz's oils are certified under the DOP.
