Olive Auction built this page from public records so buyers can find the estate. Its own people can claim it at no cost — complete the story, list lots, answer buyers.
After a claim, we confirm by emailEverything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.
Oro Bailén comes out of Villanueva de la Reina in Jaén, on the shoulder of the Sierra Morena between Bailén and Andújar, at around 400 metres where the Meseta gives way to the Guadalquivir valley. The Gálvez-González family was in brick manufacturing when it bought two farms there in 1999: La Casa del Agua, on the campiña, which now holds the mill, and Los Juncales, up in the sierra. The oil project itself dates from 2002, and in 2005 the family set up Galgón 99, S.L. to grow, press, bottle and sell under one roof.
The groves are planted the old way, ten metres by ten, each olive standing as three trunks together, fully irrigated and worked under Spain's integrated production rules with composted organic waste and cover vegetation against erosion. Fruit reaches the mill within two hours of picking.
The record starts early. Spain's Alimentos de España award went to the oil as best extra virgin of the 2008-09 campaign, and again in 2015-16 in the sweet green fruity category. At the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition the Picual took Best in Category in the medium fruity class in 2018-19, and in 2021-22 the mill collected Gold for five oils at once: Picual, Picual BIO, Arbequina, Hojiblanca and Frantoio. In 2019 the EVOOLEUM guide named the Picual its best extra virgin olive oil in the world.
