Moulin Oltremonti

Corsica AOP, Linguizzetta · France
On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Moulin Oltremonti works 35 hectares in two parcels at Linguizzetta, on Corsica's eastern coast between sea and mountain. The olive grove started in the spring of 2008 with close to a thousand trees of Ghjermana di Casinca, raised from cuttings the mill says were taken off secular olive trees in the village of Monte, in the Castagniccia. A second parcel followed in 2012, planted with Ghjermana de Casinca, Ghjermana de Tallano and Sabina from cuttings at Monte and at Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano, bringing the grove to five hectares. A first harvest came in autumn 2011; in autumn 2013 a 450-square-metre mill went up on the property so that everything from fruit to bottle happens on site. The oil carries the AOP Huile d'olive de Corse — Oliu di Corsica under approval number 2004 M/O 2013, and the holding is in conversion to organic farming.

Bottlings are separated by parcel, variety and picking date; Cuvée Émilie is pure Ghjermana de Casinca off one of the first plantings, picked at the end of October or the start of November. At the Athena International Olive Oil Competition in 2017 the mill's Intensu took a Double Gold with Best of Class for France and Athéa a Gold. Galoppa took a Bronze at the International Olive Council's Mario Solinas Quality Award in Madrid in 2017 and a Second Prize in 2018, a year in which it gathered six awards across five competitions and reached 163rd in the EVOO World Ranking. A Gold followed at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition for a blend of Taggiasca, Ghjermana di Casinca and Leccio del Corno.
