Melgarejo is the label of Aceites Campoliva, S.L., in Pegalajar, on the edge of the Sierra Mágina natural park in Jaén. The Sierra Mágina designation of origin dates the business to 1780, when it began with a stone roller mill and a beam press, and records that the fifth generation of the family runs it now. The mill today covers 5,000 square metres with production, storage and bottling plant, and takes an average of four million kilograms of olives a season.
The groves lie inside the park, a range of steep rock that served as the frontier between Arab and Christian kingdoms from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries, and whose spread of altitudes, terrains and microclimates the producer credits for the character of its fruit. Picual is the variety certified by the Sierra Mágina regulatory council, and Frantoio, Hojiblanca and Arbequina are bottled alongside it.
By the designation's own listing, Melgarejo Cosecha Propia has taken the Alcuza Prize of the Sierra Mágina designation of origin on numerous occasions, and the range has won the Alimentos de España prize, Jaén Selección and the International Olive Council's Mario Solinas award. In 2017 Melgarejo Premium Picual took a gold medal at the Olive Oil Award in Zürich, judged by the Swiss olive oil tasting panel recognised by the International Olive Council.
