On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Marqués de Valdueza takes its oil from Perales de Valdueza, a farm near Mérida in Extremadura that the Álvarez de Toledo family describes as tied to it for many generations. The title itself is dated: Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo y Osorio received the marquisate from Felipe IV in 1624. Mérida, Roman Emerita Augusta and capital of the province of Lusitania, was founded on ground the estate notes Rome chose for vine and olive.

Two hundred hectares of olives sit on the farm, alongside forty hectares of vineyard, with mill and winery both on site so that fruit goes from grove to milling without leaving the property. The oil blends four varieties, Arbequina, Picual, Hojiblanca and Morisca. Olives are never gathered from the ground, harvest timing is set by maturity testing, malaxation is held below 27°C, separation is by two-phase centrifuge, and the oil is kept in stainless steel under nitrogen. A second label, Merula, comes off the same estate.

The awards the estate lists run from a finalist's diploma in the International Olive Council's Mario Solinas competition in 2006, through the best extra virgin olive oil prize from Spain's Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs in 2010 and gold medals at Cinve in 2011 and 2012, to a silver at the New York International Olive Oil Competition and a gold at the Los Angeles County Fair, both in 2013.
