On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The mill, told properly

Les huiles d'olive Lahmar is a third-generation family business which states that for more than seventy years the Lahmar family has had the quality of its 100 per cent extra virgin olive oil at the centre of the business, and that its oils come from 96,000 olive trees planted on family land. The French pages of its site place that land in the region of Mahdia in Tunisia; the English pages of the same site render the region as Mandia. Harvesting is described as traditional and by hand, and the company states that no one but Lahmar cultivates, processes and bottles its extra virgin oil. Its about page records a bottling plant opened in 2017 at Saint-Roch-de-l'Achigan in Quebec, with laboratory testing on site; no mill of its own is named on any page opened.

The range is bottled under the Go Natural mark in 500ml and one-litre formats, organic and conventional, with a Green Spoon three-litre chef format and bulk barrels and containers alongside. The product pages give the olives as Tunisian Chemlali and the acidity as lower than 0.8 per cent.

The producer lists a silver at the London International Olive Oil Competition in 2019 and again in 2020, a gold at the TOP Best Tunisian Olive Oil competition in 2020, a gold at the Athena International Olive Oil Competition in 2020, and a gold at the Office National de l'Huile's prize for the best Tunisian extra virgin olive oil in 2022. The ONH's own page for that prize describes it as an annual competition it organises, in which submitted extra virgin samples are assessed by a specialist panel on flavour, aroma, balance and texture; the winners named on that page are those of the seventh edition, for the 2023-24 season.

Two competition records carry the name differently from the producer's own site. The Athena competition's published 2020 medals table lists, among its gold medals, an oil called Lahmar from Lahmar Olive Oil, entered as an organic Chetoui from Kairouan, Hajeb El Ayoun, against the address lahmaroliveoil.com. The NYIOOC's Official Guide to the World's Best Olive Oils holds the producer as Lamar Olive Oil against lamaroliveoil.com, records a Silver in 2023 for Go Natural, and describes that oil as an organic monovarietal Chetoui grown in Mahdia with an acidity of less than 0.8 per cent — a variety that differs from the Chemlali given on the producer's own product pages.
