On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

Las Doscientas takes its name from the ground it started with: 200 hectares planted in the Maule Valley in 2005. The grove lies west of Talca, near the old town of Pencahue, and runs towards the coast. The producer entry in the NYIOOC guide lists Arbequina, Leccino, Frantoio and FS17 among the trees, while Picual and Arbequina are bottled as monovarietals under the two labels the company uses, Las Doscientas and Olivo de Plata. Planted area has since reached about 700 hectares. The mill is built for volume, taking 300 tonnes of olives a day with storage for 2,500,000 litres, and the business trades as Comercializadora y Exportadora Las Doscientas SpA under general manager José Pablo Illanes.

The Picual carries most of the record. It won Gold at the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition in 2023 and again in 2025, and the Oliva de Plata took Silver in 2023. In December 2023 the same Picual came first in a blind tasting of more than 20 olive oils from around the world staged by the São Paulo newspaper Estadão, the panel marking it for balanced bitterness and pungency, a faintly grassy aroma and a note of artichoke. Earlier work is logged in Italy, where oils from both labels collected distinctions at L'Orciolo d'Oro from 2007 onwards, and in Israel, where the Picual took a Gran Prestigio Oro at Terraolivo in 2019.
