On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The mill, told properly

Herdade do Monte da Ribeira lies at Pedrógão, in the municipality of Vidigueira in the Alentejo, near the village of Marmelar, some seventeen kilometres east of Vidigueira and thirteen from the Alqueva reservoir. The estate's own history opens with a sale of the property dated 8 April 1958 and records its purchase in 1986 by the industrialist Victor Carmona e Costa, who rebuilt the farm; it is held today by Casa Agrícola HMR, S.A., owned in full by the Fundação Victor e Graça Carmona e Costa.

The producer's pages put the estate at about 1,050 hectares, with 43 hectares of vineyard planted from 1989 — the 1992 vintage founded its Vidigueira wine label — and 210 hectares of olive grove, including traditional dryland plantings dominated by the Galega variety among trees the producer describes as centenary and in places millennial. Its account records a peak harvest above a thousand tonnes in 2020/21, and an oil range that began with Pousio and Pousio Premium in 2016, followed by Pousio Clássico in 2018.

Pousio Homenagem Oliveiras Centenárias, which the estate's history dates to 2022, is drawn from those old groves. The product page for the 2024 edition gives a field blend of 95 per cent Galega with 5 per cent Verdeal and Bico de Corvo, an acidity of 0.4 per cent, cold extraction with the olives sent to the mill immediately on picking, and the traditional dryland grove's participation in the LIFE Olivares Vivos+ conservation project.
