Olive Auction built this page from public records so buyers can find the estate. Its own people can claim it at no cost — complete the story, list lots, answer buyers.
After a claim, we confirm by emailEverything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.
Herdade do Esporão lies outside Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the Alentejo, on ground whose geographical boundaries were set in 1267, when the property was still called Defesa do Esporão, and have gone essentially unchanged since. The estate was bought in 1973 by José Roquette and Joaquim Bandeira from the counts of Alcáçovas, who had held it in the family; the first harvest under the Esporão name followed in 1985, and olive oil entered the business in 1997 with the purchase of SPAZA, the Sociedade Produtora de Azeites do Alentejo, now Esporão Azeites. Of the estate's 1,840 hectares, 441 are vineyard and 93 olive grove, all of it certified organic.
Olival dos Arrifes accounts for most of that olive ground: roughly 80 hectares planted in 2007 on the stony arrifes the grove is named for, split between Cobrançosa and Arbequina and organic from the outset. Picking runs from October into December and the fruit is milled at Herdade do Esporão itself.
At the Concurso Nacional de Azeites de Portugal the oil was judged best on the market for a third consecutive year, with golds in the medium green fruity and organic production categories. In 2023 it took Extra Gold at BIOL in Italy and Gold at the New York International Olive Oil Competition; in 2025 it repeated both, adding a Gold at Olive Japan and fourth place worldwide at Olio Nuovo Days in France.
