On the record

What the public record already says

Everything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.

How it came to be

The story so far

El Mistol began in 1997 in San Juan, in western Argentina, as a family project. The first ground was Finca Don Mario, about 200 hectares of olives at La Puntilla under engineered irrigation; a second property, Finca Doña Aida, followed in 2008 at Guanacache, taken on for its soils, and added 150 hectares. Together they make up the 350 hectares the producer farms, at around 700 metres, in a place it describes by its dry climate, wide day-to-night temperature range and deep soils.

The chain stays in the producer's hands from tree to bottle: mechanical picking between April and June, fruit into its own plant within twenty-four hours, cold extraction below 27 °C, and stainless steel silos for storage. Two blends carry the name, Clásico, Arbequina with Coratina, held under 0.25% acidity, and Premium, Arbequina with Picual and Coratina, under 0.20%.

The record starts in 2008, with a two-star Superior Taste Award from the International Taste and Quality Institute in Brussels, judged the best Argentine oil that year; the producer counts more than eighty international recognitions since. Among them are a first prize in the southern hemisphere class of the International Olive Council's Mario Solinas Quality Award in 2022, Gold at the New York International Olive Oil Competition in both 2023 and 2024, and in 2025 the title of best Argentine extra virgin in the EVOO World Ranking, a non-profit table compiled by the World Association of Journalists and Writers of Wines and Liquors from results across international competitions.
