Darmmess comes out of Deir Mimas, a village in the Marjayoun caza of southern Lebanon that sits at 580 metres above the Litani River, within sight of the Crusader-built Beaufort Castle. The producer counts about 6,000 inhabitants there against 130,000 olive trees, four mills and six churches, and puts some of those trees at more than 600 years, with a few it believes may reach 2,000. Rose Bechara Perini, a native of the village, founded Darmmess in 2019 and moved it onto a social-enterprise footing from early 2021, working with local growers, filling gaps in their marketing and distribution and supplying technical help on organic practice.
The oil is a single variety, Souri, picked from the end of September while the fruit is still green and unripe, a timing that costs yield; the olives are then sorted, extracted cold by centrifuge without added water or heat, filtered and bottled straight away. Every bottle carries a lot number keyed to the grower's initials and a QR code that opens that lot's harvest dates, yield, chemical analysis, organoleptic score, aromas and its polyphenol and elenolide readings.
Recognition has come from tasting panels: Gold at the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition in 2023, Gold at EVO IOOC Italy in 2022 and again in 2023, Silver at Japan's JOOP in 2020, and, in the Standards of Excellence for High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oils, Silver in 2021 and 2023 with Bronze in 2022.
