Olive Auction built this page from public records so buyers can find the estate. Its own people can claim it at no cost — complete the story, list lots, answer buyers.
After a claim, we confirm by emailEverything here comes from public sources — award lists, certification registers, the territory inventories. The rest of the story — the family, the grove, the real age of the trees, this year's lab sheet — only the mill can tell, and it is the part buyers bid on.
Ateek is a variety given a label. The association of Jordan's olive product producers and exporters launched the extra virgin olive oil at a ceremony on 29 January 2023, pressed from Mehras, a cultivar considered among the oldest in the Mediterranean basin, with the association's executive director, Ruba Daghmish, framing the launch as a showcase for the history of the country's Mehras trees. The name is descriptive: the director general of the National Agricultural Research Center, Nizar Haddad, has explained that Mehras is the word used for very large old trees, ones whose trunk three men can reach around, and that the genotype the centre studied came from a tree of around 1,000 years, an age the published paper gives as personal communication rather than a formal dating.
That genotype was sequenced in 2020, the complete chloroplast genome of the historical cultivar Mehras, from leaves collected at Alhashemya in Ajloun, published in Mitochondrial DNA Part B by a team including Monther Sadder, professor of plant biotechnology at the University of Jordan. The centre's director of horticultural research, Salam Ayoub, has put the oil content of Mehras fruit at about 30 per cent. The launch was backed by the Netherlands and by Mercy Corps through its HortiFuture project, and Jordan's Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Alhinifat, spoke at the presentation. Mehras grows mainly in the rainfed northern highlands, where the variety was first identified. The Jordanian olive oil sector's own website lists the oil under the spelling Ateeq.
